When I was pregnant with Kahlan I knit up a storm, socks, booties, hats in all colors shapes and sizes.... what I wasn't prepared for was the hats I made not actually fitting her little head once she arrived. So many of them were too short and were just not wearable or warm enough for a December baby. I was so sad.... Out of sheer necessity (and accident) was this pattern created... I made it to fit her little newborn head and was amazed how long it actually fit her (about 2.5 months) Since then, this pattern has become a mainstay for me when knitting a gift for a friend...Because it is knit up on 10.5 needles it is very quick and the fit is perfect. This is also the most wonderful stash buster as it takes very little yarn, the perfect solution to those odd balls in your stash. Because this is such a simple pattern there is a lot of room for improvisation with the brim, or adding stripes, cables, pom poms, intarsia, whatever your heart desires.

Beautiful pattern!
Thanks for the pattern--I have a number of friends expecting this winter, plus I always enjoy the instant gratification of baby knits. :)
We must be on the same wave-length: yesterday I picked up the book Little Felted Animals, plus I ordered a needle-felting kit for a Waldorf-type doll a couple days ago. I'll let you know how things turn out!
Thank you for sharing this pattern as a foster carer who has babies to young toddlers its invaluable to me. One beautiful baby doing the modeling.
Anon- if you could message me over at ravelry or email me at thebirthlady @ gmail (dot) com I will be able to help you out. I have a designer friend reviewing the gauge on the pattern.
Thanks
Heidi
Hello Heidi - I love this pattern and cannot wait to try it - but is the gauge right? I cannot seem to obtain 7 stitches in 1 inch with worsted yarn & 10.5 needles no matter how hard I try... Was that a typo? I fell in love with graceful simplicity of your pattern but now i'm stumped - please help !!!
Think the pattern would be an addition to the cause but am having trouble with the 44 co...this will leave me with two extra stitches when I am decreasing...could you please advise me of what I am doing wrong...that you....
it's ok if you have a few extra stitches after decreasing just go ahead and cinch them with the others.
Hope this helps.
